The most versatile of the water activated batteries is the Magnesium Silver Chloride couple. These cells will sustain current densities of over 400 mA/sq cm. under certain conditions and their construction is relatively simple because magnesium and silver chloride are available in sheet form.

Silver chloride is reduced to silver and magnesium chloride dissolves thus increasing electrolyte conductivity. These factors reduce internal resistance during discharge and help maintain a flat discharge profile. The working voltage of a cell is normally 2.5 volts but is affected considerably by certain density, type of magnesium  alloy, static or forced flow electrolyte, temperature and salinity. These problems  are overcome by efficient porting. Magnesium Silver Chloride batteries have been used for many years to propel lightweight torpedoes. Bipolar construction is the most efficient method of assembly and precisely built units sometimes containing up to 200 cells in series with electrodes over 45 cm in diameter are possible. Similar methods of construction are used to produce smaller pile batteries. For example a 1 inch by 2 inch wide by 1.3 inches 15 cell battery is used to fire a squib to inflate a twenty man life raft.

Because silver chloride is flexible and coiled construction is possible. A strip of silver chloride has its length enclosed in a separator material such as ridded, perforated PVC. After attaching take off wires to the magnesium and silver chloride the strips are coiled together and assembled into a cylinder with a retaining bar across the open end. A multi-cell arrangement is possible by connecting the silver chloride of one cell to the magnesium anodes of the next cell and repeating the process until the desired number of cells is obtained, before coiling the assembly. The open construction allows very fast activation. The coiled cell is sometimes used as a shorting fuse and is an actuating device, often being used to trigger a series of events. It is used in escape stores, torpedoes, sonobouys, flares, and marine emergency devices. Typical performance of such a cell would be 1.0 volt and 0.5 amps for about 10 seconds with full working voltage in much less than one second. The battery would weigh about 9 grams.

Silver Chloride Magnesium batteries are therefore easy to manufacture as both electrodes are available in sheet form. For high current applications Silver Chloride Magnesium is the best chemistry to use.
